How We Evaluate
Curiosity Lab is a research-based site. We analyze manufacturer specifications, standard optical formulas, published safety-labeling scope, and aggregated owner-feedback themes — we don't physically bench-test every product. Every guide leads with the spec that actually decides performance, names an honest drawback for every pick, and never invents a price, star rating, or safety certification.
What we do
- Cross-check the optical formulas (aperture-to-magnification ceiling, numerical aperture, exit pupil, focal ratio) that a product's category is built on.
- Read manufacturer spec sheets rather than repeating marketing headlines.
- Aggregate recurring owner-feedback themes (durability complaints, mount stability, eyepiece quality) across public reviews.
- Name at least one honest drawback for every product we mention.
- Cite regulatory scope (like CPSC/ASTM F963 for toy chemistry sets) accurately and don't overclaim what a label covers.
What we don't do
- We don't publish exact prices or star ratings — both change constantly and Amazon's own listing is the source of truth.
- We don't invent ASINs or link to a specific listing; every product link is a tagged Amazon search so you land on current, in-stock options.
- We don't claim to have physically tested every product in a lab.
- We don't make medical, developmental, or safety-certification claims about any specific product beyond what its manufacturer documents.
Corrections and versioning
Our reference pages — The Science Gear Truth Numbers and Key Facts — carry a version number and last-updated date. When a formula's accepted range changes, a standard is revised, or we find an error, we update the page in place and bump the version and date rather than silently editing history.
